Jitney - Portland Playhouse

A predominate theme of the production was white culture’s encroachment on and colonization of black culture. The sound design embodied the concept of white Culture usurping land, art and ethos from black culture. The music of the transitions would start by the original artist and then transition into a white artists’ rerecorded or revamped version of the song where, often, the white artists found great success. This concept was held until the turning point of the play where the major characters suffer a massive loss and are forced to take control of their own situation, destiny, and future. The characters stand united taking back the jitney station, to continue the culture and keep it alive. To keep the future alive.
